Military and Censor cancellations in Romania 1913 - 1920

In the Balkan War (1913) and WW1 the Field Post Cancellations of the Romanian military units were also used as censor cancellations as all correspondence of the soldiers were distibuted by Military Postal Units.

1. Field Post Cancellations in the Balkan War

Circle cancellation (26 - 27mm) with Gitter top & bottom with text:

day, month & year in middle
and Military formation in bottom circle. Colour black, blue rare.

Circle cancellation (31 mm) with Gitter top & bottom with text:
CENZURA MILITARA POSTALA in top circle
day, month & year in middle

4. Censor cancellation with date and town

Double circle or Circle cancellation (31 mm). Normally gitter - or black halfcircles.
BIUROUL DE CENZURA MILITARAl in top circle
day, month & year in middle
toen in bottom circle. Colour black or red

Cancellation BUCURESTI-SCRISORI used mostly on letters from Jassy area.
This indicates that the Military Censorship retreating from Bucharest brought this
cancel with them and used it in the Jassy area.

5. Negative Censor cancellation

Circle cancellation (30 mm) Black circle, white text:
CENZURA MILITARA BUCURESTI in top circle
Monogram CM in middle
Used for post to foreign countries. July 1918 - September 1919

6. Rectangular Censor cancellation

Frame (56:23 mm to 60:25mm). Colour black. 1916 - 19

3 or 4 lines of text: Most usual is:
CENZURAT / Cenzura militara a jud xxx / Data

8. Double circle Censor cancellation with censor number and town

Outer double circle (28 - 30 mm) Colour black. 1917-.
Text top : Censurat (or cenzurat) text bottom: Name of town
Text middle: Number or letter+number (Bucuresti) with or without circle / irregular circle

9. Double circle Censor cancellation with censor number
Outer double circle (28 - 31 mm) Colour black or red (rare) or violet (rare). August 1917 - January 1919.
Text top : Censurat (or cenzurat) text bottom: star or nothing
Text middle: Number or letter+number (Bucuresti) with or without circle / irregular circle

10. Numeral cancellation

Censor numbers. 1 - 30 known. Used in Jassy area. Black or red (rare)

11. Numbers in square

15:15mm squares with a number in center. Colour violet.

All Post from the unoccupied parts of Romania was (from november 1916) directed through the allied Russia (Petrograd or Odessa (rare). Post to West was further transfered via Scandinavia.

The second (august 18) from Buda (German occupation) to Barlad (Free Romania)

12. Oval cancellation

a/Text: Censurat (or cenzurat) + 1 big letter. 38-40:28-30mm. July - December 1917.
Colour: Black, red or violet. Known letters: F,G,M,N,O,S
b/Text: Censurat (or cenzurat) + 1 thin letter. June 1918.

Bottom left on Military Post Cards. State Coat of Arms in center. 32 - 36 mm.
February 1917 - December 1918. Colour red, violet or green.
